For decades, the public used the Modesty Creek Road, just northeast of Anaconda, to access more than 5,000 acres of Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The area offers excellent hunting and fishing, as well as hiking and other recreation.
In recent years, Montana families lost access to Modesty Creek Road. In 2012, Anaconda-Deerlodge County reopened the road for the first time in 20 years following numerous requests by local hunters. A district court judge reaffirmed public access to the road in 2014. However in 2015, the Montana Supreme Court reversed the district court decision in a split vote, and the road was again closed.
